Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery presents a fascinating exhibition exploring the art of Islamic calligraphy, including work by Soraya Syed not seen in public before. Enjoy the beauty and harmony of Islamic penmanship and learn how its aesthetic appeal crosses borders of time, space, language and culture.

MOCA Fest

Hurriyah: Artist’s Talk & Performance

Soraya’s talk will be accompanied by a commissioned performance in response to Hurriyah by choreographer Salah El Brogy (Akram Khan Company, Protein, Salah El Brogy Company). There will be an opportunity to ask both artists’ about their collaboration.

Hurriyah

A calligraphic exploration of freedom through animation and dance


Exploring the visual and literal power of words and the emotive term 'freedom', Hurriyah is an animation installation by Soraya Syed, an exciting production in collaboration with Yeast Culture, musician Nitin Sawhney and Egyptian dancer & choreographer Salah El Brogy.

Introduction to Islamic Calligraphy (Part 1)

When: 2nd September 2013 – 6th September 2013
Time: 10:30 am – 4:30 pm
Where: The Prince’s School for Traditional Arts, Charlotte Road, London

This course introduces students to the methods and materials used in traditional Islamic calligraphy. Students will learn how to prepare their own reed pen and sized paper. They will then experience writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie these letters. The course includes studying the different applications of calligraphy in the arts and crafts of the Islamic world, and concludes with each participant making a final piece.

Panel Discussion

Artist Khyle Raja will be joined on stage by Soraya Syed, calligrapher at Art of the Pen and co-founder of Nuqta, Mohammed Ali aka Aerosol Arabic, the world renowned graffiti artist and artistic director of Soul City Arts. The chair for the evening will be Tam Hussain, columnist for the Huffington Post and contributor to the New Statesman and Al Jazeera.

Nuqta: London Launch!

Following Dubai’s successful event, we are pleased to announce the next part of Nuqta's launch tour!

On the 29th June in partnership with the Shubbak Festival and the Crossway Foundation, Nuqta will host a London launch at the Edge of Arabia Testbed Gallery, one of London’s trendiest art spaces.

The event will open with Stephen Stapleton, founder of Edge of Arabia and the Crossway Foundation, followed by a short talk by renowned curator of contemporary Middle Eastern art, Venetia Porter of the British Museum. There will be a limited edition skin of the App available for attendees and live, interactive demonstrations will be on display. There will also be the opportunity to try out your calligraphy skills using reed pens and ink as well as take home a limited edition print.

The event will be an opportunity for Nuqta fans to hang out and chat with core team members, to ask questions, make suggestions, or just have a good time with like-minded people!

Drinks and canapés will be served.

Nuqta: Launch Party

On the 21st March, The Archive will host the launch of the most exciting App of the year!

Following Art Dubai’s opening night, join us for the official unveiling of Nuqta.

Nuqta will have a launch ‘tour’ starting in Dubai during the region’s most prestigious cultural programme, Art Week. The launch will take place at one of Dubai’s freshest venues – The Archive, Safa Park on 21st March at 6.30pm: www.thearchive.ae.

The luminaries of the international calligraphy and typography scene will be attending with the likes of renowned artist Wissam Shawkat and eminent director of The Khatt Foundation - Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFares.

By attending, you'll also be in with a chance of winning a fantastic prize which we'll be announcing over the next couple of weeks!

A short presentation of the Nuqta project will be made, a fun surprise activity will follow and guests will be invited to download the app.

Introduction to Islamic Art Workshop

When: 2nd March 2013 – 3rd March 2013

This one-day workshop will offer participants a practical introduction to the three pillars of Islamic art, namely geometry, calligraphy and Islimi (floral and foliate forms). Tutors from the School will give demonstrations and lead participants through the techniques of constructing a geometric pattern, writing Arabic script, and exploring Islimi patterns.
